What does FS mean for STIHL trimmer? ›

Start the engine, let it warm up, and then turn the LA screw clockwise or counterclockwise as necessary to make the trimmer head stop turning. If the engine idles unevenly or sputters when you make this adjustment, turn the L screw clockwise about 1/4 turn or until the engine idles smoothly.

Stihl String Trimmer Rewind Pulley and Spring

The rewind spring might be broken. When the starter rope is pulled and released, the rewind spring recoils the starter rope onto the rewind pulley. If the rewind spring is broken, the rope won't be able to recoil onto the pulley. As a result, the engine won't start.

They are typically labeled L (low speed jet), H (high speed jet), and I (idler jet). Your saw may be labeled differently (in the photos in the Gallery below, the idler jet is labeled “S”), but you'll have three screws that correspond to these descriptions.

Use a 40:1 two-cycle oil mix ratio. One gallon of gasoline combined with 3.2 oz of two-cycle engine oil. Unsure of the age of your equipment? Use the 40:1 mixture.

We recommend a 50:1 mix ratio (20mls oil per 1 litre fuel) when using STIHL 2-Stroke oil. If you're using a different brand of 2-Stroke oil, you'll need to mix at 25:1 (40mls oil per 1 litre fuel).

The main differences between the STIHL FS 40 and FS 50 are in power and weight. The FS 50 has a slightly higher power output (0.8 kW compared to 0.7 kW) and is a bit heavier (4.5 kg compared to 4.4 kg) than the FS 40.
