Description
The Horne Family Charitable Foundation makes grants for both regional and national programs. Details below are for the national programs.
The Foundation seeks to broaden its impact by supporting national initiatives aimed at the Environment, Wildlife Preservation and Animal Welfare.
Environmental Protection
Land:
One of George Horne’s chief concerns was protecting public lands and preserving species habitats, in hopes of ensuring a future where large tracts of land would be unspoiled by development. The Foundation welcomes proposals from organizations that are fighting for the future generations’ access to the natural world and all of its diverse ecosystems through programs that encompass everything from safeguarding old-growth forests to maintaining prairie grasslands and securing open spaces.
Water:
The concept of “Water is Life” has never been more crucial as it is today. In fact, the Horne Family’s company, now called Watts Water Technologies, was founded on the core principle that clean, potable water should be available to everyone. At present, the contamination of the world’s oceans, rivers, streams and public water supplies has become an evolving crisis of mass proportions and a fundamental threat to populations around the world. The Foundation seeks proposals from organizations that are addressing any aspect of the water pollution crisis, such as cleaning up plastic pollution in the oceans, working on bans that eliminate pesticide dumping in rivers and streams or enforcing regulations governing safe drinking water, to name a few.
Climate change:
As climate change proves to be one of the most defining challenges of our time, we are extremely interested in collaborating with organizations who work specifically to combat global warming on various fronts. Particularly since the younger generations will feel the most impact, the Foundation is interested in learning about any endeavors that encourage the next generation to actively participate in solutions. Examples might include, but are not limited to, environmental education programs that focus on sustainable living practices; art projects or community programs that broaden awareness of the impact of renewable energy initiatives, and how the implementation of such strategies will impact people, lands and wildlife.
Wildlife Preservation
George Horne’s lifelong interest in land conservation extended to an avid interest in animal protection, both domestic and in the wild. The foundation supports wildlife preservation efforts both nationally and internationally. Around the globe, some of our most treasured species are facing extinction due to factors related to both climate change and a continuing disconnect between humanity’s focus on growth and industry at the expense of nature. On the national front, some examples of groups considered are those combating pesticide use affecting pollinators; engaging in science-based research on erosion of species’ habitats; protecting wildlife populations in areas under siege by infrastructure and development; as well as organizations that are rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals back to the wild.
Animal Welfare
George Horne’s interest in environment and wildlife causes extended to the domestic animal world as well. The Foundation feels that all creatures are inextricably linked, and knowing that the measure of a society is based on its treatment of animals, they are particularly concerned with the rising level of abuse and indifference to the sentient nature of these beings. They will consider initiatives that address any aspect of the animal welfare movement, such as anti-cruelty campaigns and rescue efforts that are aimed at hoarding cases and natural disasters.
The Foundation welcomes requests for general operating support and efforts designed to increase organizational capacity. They also encourage requests for specific program initiatives or improvements.
