Glenmont: Smoke Island is Coming Soon - The MoCo Show (2024)

Smoke Island is moving in to the location that was home to the recently closed Ruffles of London at 12331-F Georgia Avenue in the Glenmont Shopping Center.

The store refers to itself as “a trendsetting online Tobacco store, offering our first-rate products and exceptional customer service to customers to check our products from the comfort of their own homes.”

Per its website, the “online store is currently to view products that are available in our physical stores.”

Smoke Island currently has two additional locations in Georgia Avenue– one in Wheaton and one in Silver Spring, as well as DC locations in Takoma and Tenleytown. The opening of this store, date still unknown, will not affect either of the other two MoCo locations.

Aaron Seyedian launched the home cleaning company Well-Paid Maids in June 2017 and, that August, began offering cleaning services around the D.C. area with his staff of three -- including himself.

At the time, he paid cleaners a living wage of $16 an hour, plus benefits.

Here's what he told The Washington Post in September 2017: "It's just immoral for people to have to panic every time the rent is due, to wonder how they're going to pay for their groceries, or whether they can buy their kid a pair of shoes."

Today, Well-Paid Maids has grown into a team of around 35 employees. Cleaners now get paid a starting wage of $24 an hour. Plus, they get benefits, like health, vision, dental and life insurance; 24 paid days off per year; 100% employer-paid commuting costs; and more.
